Neil Diamond's new Freedom Song had a double debut in Washington DC on July 4th. He gave the song's first public performance after the 3rd inning of the Washington Nationals baseball game on the 4th and then he lip-synched it for a nationwide audience on the PBS special A Capitol Fourth.
The song was inspired by the resilient spirit of both Boston and Washington. Diamond said Freedom Song was fueled by both the Boston Marathon bombing and a visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. In a statement, Neil said the song comes from "my love for this country and its two greatest assets: the spirit of its people and the freedoms it has afforded us all by law."
