Elvis Presley would've turned 78 this week. Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. He moved with his family to Memphis where he would pick up a job as a local truck driver. Elvis was later "discovered" by Sam Phillips at Sun Records. What followed were a series of early hits that got Elvis noticed by RCA Records who would later sign him in July, 1955 to a $12,000 recording contract.
What followed were 18 #1 hits with Hearbreak Hotel being the first and Suspicious Minds being the final chart topping hit in 1969. Elvis also starred in a series of movies (most of which he didn't care for). Elvis Presley became the most prominent pop culture icon of the 20th century. He died August 16, 1977 at age 42 in Memphis. We're going to pay tribute to The King of Rock 'n Roll all day today!
